Diablo 2 Resurrected Gems

Introduction

Gems in Diablo 2 Resurrected are functionless on their own, but they possess a great amount of power when they are utilized with a helm, shield, or weapon. It bestows potential magical enchantments on the item, as well as its wearer. Socketed Armor was basically added when the expansion was first released, but the D2R items have identical statistics in either helms or armor. Once Gems are socketed, they add special bonuses onto the item.

Gem Varieties

There are seven different types of gems available in Diablo 2 Resurrected, including Amethysts, Diamonds, Emeralds, Rubies, Sapphires, Topazes, and Skulls. Each of these Gems has different effects when added on an item, which is also known as Socketed. There are five quality levels for the gems introduced in Diablo 2. The following levels are from the worst to the best – Chipped, Flawed, Normal, Flawless, and Perfect.

These Gems cannot be bought and the only source to obtain them is through monster drops, quest rewards, and chests. You will obtain better quality Gems as you advance or progress in the game. The quality of Gems dropped is based upon your M-Level, and do keep in mind that Perfect Gems are never dropped, but can be found in the form of a reward on completing the Hell Forge quest.

Socketed Items

The only items that can be socketed with Gems are; Helms, Weapons, Shields, and Body Armor, with Body Armor being added a little after the release of the expansion. This also means you cannot use the benefits of a Gem through Boots, Belts, Jewelry, or Gloves. Items vary dependent upon their number of sockets, type, and quality. For instance, Helms can have 1 to 3 sockets, Body Armor can have 1 to 4 sockets, Weapons can have 1 to 6 sockets, and Shields can have 1 to 4 sockets.

Once you insert a Gem into a socket, it will remain there forever and cannot be removed in the Diablo 2 Classic. However, in the Diablo 2 expansion, you can remove the Gems from the sockets by destroying them with the help of a Horadric Cube Recipe. It doesn’t damage the item, but the Gem is completely lost.

Upgrading Gems

You can combine three Gems of the same type and quality with the Horadric Cube to upgrade its level of quality by one digit. You can only find Gem Shrines rarely, but they are worth it, as they help upgrade the level of a single Gem in your inventory. It’s always best to carry a flawless Gem along with you to upgrade and make sure that it’s present in your inventory when using the Gem Shrine. Also, if you don’t have a Gem with you, or if you only possess a Perfect Gem, then a random Chipped Gem will be dropped.

Gem Effects

The effects of Gems vary, but they are quite logical. If the Gem is placed into the weapon socket, it will generally offer damage bonuses, while Gems in Shield and Helms or Armor slots offer resistance or HP bonuses, respectively. The benefit offered by a socketed Gem is dependent upon its quality.

As you can see in the image, this is how Gems look when they are added to an item. The sockets are displayed down on the left section for every socketed item and in case they are filled, then the Gem will be visible there, rather than the empty holes. The items socketed appear brightly colored, and their appearances are based on the first socketed Gem. For instance, an item with an Amethyst level placed first, and then two with Emerald level will be shown as purple; not green.

If the Gems are of the same type, the bonuses will stack, which means if you have two Ruby level Gems in a sword, the fire damage will increase twofold. It arithmetically depends and not geometrically, because if you have three Sapphire level Gems inserted in an item, then the chilling time increases to 3 seconds, showing how it affects the time rather than the moving up to freezing the monster. The same goes for the Fire Damage inflicted with three Ruby-level gems, as they won’t create a firewall around the monster, but simply increase the Fire Damage.
